Why won't my HEIC open?

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default — a modern, efficient format that fits about twice as many photos in the same storage. The problem is that HEIC isn't widely supported outside recent Apple devices, so the moment you send a photo to a Windows PC, an older Android, or an upload form, it may simply refuse to open.
